What Is A SHEA Gas Passport?
At Jason Rowley Ltd, we work with people every day who are starting their journey in the utilities sector or those looking to keep up with essential training and certifications. One of the most common questions we get is about the SHEA Gas Passport.
If you’re looking to work on the gas network, this is one of the first boxes you’ll need to tick. The SHEA Gas Passport is issued through EUSR (the Energy & Utility Skills Register) and shows that you understand the basic health, safety and environmental principles involved in gas operations.
It’s designed to give you access to construction and operational sites and is recognised across the industry as a key qualification for those working in the field.
Who Needs A SHEA Gas Passport, and Why It Matters
If you’re planning to work on or around the gas network, then the SHEA Gas Passport is a must-have. It’s aimed at anyone involved in utilities work, whether you’re directly handling gas infrastructure or working alongside those who do.
From operatives to supervisors, engineers to contractors, having this qualification on your card helps confirm that you’re trained to industry standards.
The passport is recognised as a CSCS partner scheme, which means it allows you access to a wide range of construction and utility sites where the proper safety credentials are non-negotiable.
It’s valid for five years, so it’s a great way to get your foot in the door and stay there with confidence.
Course Structure at Jason Rowley Ltd
When you come to us for your SHEA Gas Passport training, you’ll find the process is straightforward and user-friendly.
We’ve designed the course to be completed in one day. If your schedule suits you better, we offer it in person at our training centre in Manchester or virtually. There’s also a half-day refresher option for those renewing their passports.
The course consists of modules covering general health and safety and gas-specific content. It has been developed in accordance with EUSR standards and aims to ensure that students leave with practical knowledge they can apply on-site from day one.
What You Learn: Module-by-Module Breakdown
The course starts with the core health, safety and environmental awareness training that applies across the utilities sector.
We go through legal responsibilities, what your duties are under health and safety law, and what employers are expected to do.
We then examine topics such as environmental impact, hazards identification, the importance of occupational health, and emergency handling on-site.
Once the core modules are complete, we focus on gas-specific topics, like working on gas premises, understanding pressure regulation systems, and the controls needed to work safely with gas.
While it may sound like a lot, we make sure to teach everything in a relaxed, down-to-earth way. We use real-life examples and plenty of discussion to keep things relevant and engaging.
Assessment & Passing Criteria
At the end of each module, there’s a short multiple-choice assessment. These aren’t designed to trip you up; we’re not about that.
As long as you’ve paid attention and engaged with the content, you’ll do just fine. The assessments are straightforward, and we’re always on hand to support you if you need a bit of extra explanation.
Once you pass the course, we register you with EUSR, and you’ll receive your SHEA Gas Passport. These days, you’ll get a virtual EUSR card pretty much straight away, and a physical card will follow.
This card is valid for five years and gives you access to gas-related sites where this certification is a legal or contractual requirement.
Renewal and Ongoing Compliance
Since the SHEA Gas Passport lasts for five years, it’s important to note when you’ll need to renew it.
When the time comes, we offer a half-day refresher course that can be done in person or online, depending on what works best for you.
The refresher is a great opportunity to brush up on your knowledge, learn about any changes to the regulations, and ensure that you’re still working in accordance with the latest industry standards.
We often find that people enjoy the refresher just as much as the initial course, because it’s a chance to reflect on how things have changed and how your own practices have developed over time.
