National Water Hygiene Training

The National Water Hygiene Scheme is a vital part of keeping the UK’s drinking water safe. At Jason Rowley Ltd, we deliver EUSR National Water Hygiene training to help workers meet the strict standards required by UK water companies. This training, often referred to as the Blue Card, is mandatory for anyone working on the clean water network, including service reservoirs, water treatment works, water pumping stations, and service pipes.

Holding this qualification proves that you understand good water hygiene practices, your role in protecting public health, and how to prevent potential contamination when working on or near drinking water systems.

Why Is the National Water Hygiene Scheme Important?

The National Water Hygiene Scheme plays an essential role in ensuring safe drinking water is maintained across the country. It was developed by the UK water industry to set a consistent standard for hygiene awareness among workers. Without it, the risk of contamination from human activity in the network, known as restricted operations, increases.

Whether you’re a water company employee, subcontractor, or part of a self-lay organisation, you must complete this course before working on any operational sites within the water industry. This includes work carried out for other organisations that access the clean water network.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is National Water Hygiene (Blue Card)?

The National Water Hygiene (‘Blue Card’) course plays a vital part in ensuring the protection of public health and promoting good water hygiene practices. The scheme has been developed in collaboration with all UK water companies and key stakeholders from across the water industry, so you can be confident that the content covers all the required knowledge and awareness of good water hygiene practices.

The course is designed for all individuals requiring access to clean water sites or working on the clean water network – known as ‘Restricted Operations’, including supervisors and managers. It’s not just water company employees. If you are working on a ‘Restricted Operation’ on behalf of a water company subcontractor or other organisation, such as Self-Lay Organisation (SLOs) – then you need a National Water Hygiene EUSR registration.

There are no formal entry requirements, but all candidates must have a basic understanding of written and spoken English.

You will need a stable internet connection, a laptop or desktop computer. A tablet that is 10” or greater may be used. Mobile phones cannot be used under any circumstances. You should be in a room on your own but if this is not possible headphones must be used.

You will be sent an answer sheet that you must print out. It is a multiple-choice tick box style sheet and once completed you will take a photo and submit to the trainer.

In compliance with the Energy & Utility Skills Register, SHEA EUSR registration provides evidence for an engineer that they are knowledgeable and understand work safety in an operational environment. A EUSR registration card qualifies an operations worker to access and work in a site related to the gas, power, and telecommunications sectors.

National Water Hygiene registrations last for three years, from the date of the course.

3.5 Hours

The cost of training includes EUSR registration, a virtual card as well as a plastic smart card.

All EUSR SHEA cards carry the CSCS logo giving the individual access to operational sites.

National Water Hygiene courses are normally delivered online via a virtual classroom with a trainer to help and guide you through the course. The course can be delivered in a classroom subject to minimum numbers and if this is your preference, please get in touch to arrange a suitable date.

Multiple choice questions normally taken after each module.

Please feel free to get in touch if you can’t find the answer to your question.
