SCO NRO stands for Safe Control of Operations: Non-Routine Operations, and it forms Module 3 of the nationally recognised EUSR SCO training programme. This module is designed explicitly for managing gas works that fall outside the scope of standard, pre-approved procedures, commonly known as Non-Routine Operations.
You must already have completed Module 1 (SCO Core) and Module 2 (SCO Permit to Work) to be eligible for NRO training. These modules build the foundation for understanding your responsibilities under gas network safety procedures.
The SCO NRO (Non-Routine Operations) course is essential for professionals who are directly responsible for managing gas works that fall outside of routine procedures. This includes individuals named as competent persons and authorising engineers, key roles in ensuring the safe and proper execution of high-risk gas activities.
You should take this course if you are involved in the planning, supervision, execution, or sign-off of gas works where routine operations cannot be applied. Your employing organisation’s responsible engineers must nominate you for this module, as it confirms you have the experience and operational background to take on the additional responsibility of managing NRO activities.

You’ll learn how to understand the specific control measures that apply to NROs, identify relevant process roles and responsibilities, and interpret gas safety procedures based on the gas network you’re operating in.
We place a strong emphasis on real-world scenarios and process understanding. You’ll finish the course knowing how to safely execute NROs using your own gas safety procedures and the recognised SCO scheme.
The full training programme is delivered over two consecutive days. On day one, you’ll cover theoretical content in a classroom environment. On day two, you’ll complete your assessment.
Courses are delivered in small groups of up to eight people to allow individual support throughout your training delivery. Our trainers ensure you’re fully prepared before entering the assessment.

Once you’ve successfully completed the course and passed the assessment, your SCO NRO registration with EUSR will remain valid for five years.
To keep your qualification current, you must complete a renewal module before your certificate expires. The renewal course uses a slightly different assessment route to reflect your existing knowledge.
