SCO Core, PtW & FoA (Renewal)

Our SCO Core, PTW and FOA Renewal course is designed for gas industry personnel who already hold valid SCO registrations and need to maintain their competence under the Safe Control of Operations (SCO) scheme. This renewal module ensures you remain fully aligned with updated gas network procedures, industry expectations and EUSR registration requirements.

Renewing your SCO Core Module (Module 1), Permit to Work (Module 2) and Form of Authority (Module 5) is essential for anyone who continues to issue permits, review documentation, oversee routine operations or apply their own gas safety procedures in day‑to‑day work across the gas network. The renewal programme reinforces your responsibilities, updates your knowledge, and helps you continue to work in a safe and proper manner across the UK gas distribution networks.

SCO PtW FoA Renewal Course

SCO PtW and FoA Renewal Overview

This renewal course is specifically designed for individuals who already hold a current SCO registration and require an updated qualification to continue operating under the SCO scheme. The renewal payment online option allows you to complete your refresher training remotely through a live virtual classroom, led by one of our qualified trainers. Classroom-based delivery is available for groups upon request.

The renewal programme focuses on reinforcing existing knowledge rather than introducing foundational learning. It revisits the structure of the SCO scheme, the responsibilities of competent persons and authorising engineers, and the correct use of gas safety procedures based on revised national guidance. Upon successful completion, renewed EUSR registration is issued, confirming your continued compliance and professional competence.

This renewal module takes approximately four hours to complete and includes refreshed training, assessment and updated certification.

For employers requiring multiple renewals, we offer coordinated bookings, group delivery options and structured renewal days tailored to operational schedules.

FOA Certification and SCO Renewal Requirements

Form of Authority (FOA) is a core element of the SCO scheme, and maintaining FOA certification is critical for professionals who issue, manage or oversee formal authorisation for gas network work. FOA certification holders must renew before their expiration date to ensure they continue to meet compliance requirements under relevant law and industry standards.

During the renewal, you will revisit:

  • The purpose of a Form of Authority and when it should be used
  • Communication protocols, conflict checking and records management
  • Responsibilities of FOA certification holders and authorising engineers
  • Expectations around accurate and truthful information and the prevention of unauthorised disclosures

The FOA certification renewals process ensures that individuals working under the SCO scheme understand the impact of their documentation, their authority and the legal implications of incorrect or misleading information. FOA considers misleading information or unauthorised disclosures as conduct that may constitute grounds for removal of certification. The renewal process helps reinforce the importance of accurate documentation and safe control of work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SCO?

The SCO scheme ensures that individuals working on the gas network are trained to do so safely by understanding gas network procedures and correct Permitry. The SCO scheme is the knowledge-based part of a Competent Person’s or Authorising Engineer’s route to network registration and is followed by the competence-based part of the overall requirement.

For individuals new to SCO or whose registration has expired the course must be completed in a classroom. For those that need to renew a current registration there is the option to do an online course.

SCO courses are delivered on request so please contact us to arrange a suitable date. We have a venue in Manchester but can provide the course at a venue of your choosing anywhere in the UK.

The cost of training includes EUSR registration, a virtual card, and a plastic smart card.

All candidates must possess a current SHEA Gas registration.

A combination of written and practical assessments within the classroom are carried out.

SCO registration lasts for five years from the date the course started.

  • SCO NRO 1.5 Days
  • SCO RO ½ Day

The SCO 23 is a mandatory requirement for Cadent Contractors and is a recent requirement, which is why you may not have heard about it. Without it you will not be able to get your STC (Safety Technician Competent).

The course consists of:

  • A short video
  • A presentation with some questions
  • A declaration letter that needs to be signed by the candidate.

Anyone that has an existing SCO registration will need to complete this and if they are doing a new SCO course it will be included at the end.

Please feel free to get in touch if you can’t find the answer to your question.
