Guide to NWH Training for Beginners

At Jason Rowley Ltd, we work closely with individuals and organisations involved in the water industry, and hygiene is one of the most important topics we discuss.

Keeping our drinking water safe is a huge responsibility, and everyone who works in or around potable water needs to understand the basics of how to protect that supply. That’s where the National Water Hygiene training comes in.

Commonly referred to as the Blue Card, this training is your entry point into working safely on water sites.

Whether you’re new to the industry or moving from a different utility, this guide will explain what to expect from the course and how we deliver it here at Jason Rowley Ltd.

What Is the NWH (Blue Card)?

The National Water Hygiene scheme is an essential training programme developed by Energy & Utility Skills. It’s widely recognised across the UK by water companies and contractors alike.

Once you complete the training and pass the assessment, you’re issued what’s commonly called the Blue Card. This card shows that you’ve been trained to understand the risks involved in working with drinking water systems and how to avoid contaminating them.

It’s not just a tick-box exercise, either. Water companies won’t let you onto certain sites without it.

The training and the card give employers confidence that everyone involved in the process is working to the same high standards of hygiene and safety.

Who Needs It: Identifying Restricted Operations Roles

You might be wondering if this training is really for you. If your role involves what’s called “restricted operations,” then the answer is yes.

Restricted operations include tasks like working on service reservoirs, water treatment works, or anywhere potable water is stored, treated, or transported. It also includes things like laying new water pipes or connecting properties to the mains.

Basically, if you’re going to be anywhere near clean water infrastructure, you need this training. It’s not just for water company employees, either; contractors, site visitors, and cubbies need the card, too.

And if you’re just starting out in the industry, getting your Blue Card early can help you stand out and access more opportunities.

Course Formats, How Jason Rowley Ltd Delivers NWH

We’ve made it as easy as possible to arrange your National Water Hygiene training. At Jason Rowley Ltd, we offer the course in several formats to suit your learning style.

You can attend in person at our Manchester training centre, which is great if you prefer that face-to-face experience and want to ask questions as you go.

We also run live online sessions, where you can join from anywhere with a laptop and internet connection. For those who need maximum flexibility, we offer an e-learning and e-assessment option that allows you to complete the course in your own time.

Whichever option you choose, we make sure the training is thorough, easy to understand, and practical.

What You’ll Learn: Four Core Modules Explained

The course content is split into four main sections, each focused on a different aspect of water hygiene. First, we look at why water is such an important resource and what makes it vulnerable to contamination.

We then explore how diseases can be transmitted through water, using examples that make the risks feel real and relevant. Next, we cover the specific risks you might encounter on site, such as personal hygiene, cross-contamination, and how poor practices can affect water quality.

Finally, we focus on preventing these problems through simple, effective behaviours. We don’t just list rules; we explain why they matter and how to follow them in real-world situations.

Our trainers keep things relaxed and conversational, encouraging questions and discussion so everything really sinks in.

Health Screening & Assessment Requirements

Before you can complete the training, all candidates must undergo a short health screening. This is a standard requirement across the industry, designed to flag up any conditions that might affect your ability to work safely with potable water.

For example, if you’ve had a recent gastrointestinal illness, you might need to delay your course. It’s nothing to worry about, and we handle it with care and confidentiality. Once you’ve completed the health screening, you’ll move on to the assessment.

This is a multiple-choice test with 25 questions based on what you’ve learned during the training. Don’t stress, it’s all straightforward and we’re there to support you every step of the way.

Certification & Card Validity

After you successfully pass the assessment, we’ll register you with EUSR and issue your Blue Card. These days, you’ll usually get a virtual card first, and the physical version will follow in the post.

Your certification is valid for three years, during which time you can access any clean water site in the UK that recognises the scheme, which is pretty much all of them.

The card is proof that you’ve been trained to an approved standard and understand how to keep water safe for the public. It’s a simple piece of plastic, but it carries a lot of weight in the industry.

Renewal Process And Staying Compliant

It’s easy to forget about renewals until the last minute, but staying on top of your Blue Card expiry date is important. After three years, you’ll need to take the training again to renew your card.

The good news is that we make the process just as easy as the first time. You can choose from the same delivery methods: classroom, live online, or self-paced, and we’ll remind you when your renewal is due if you trained with us originally.

Taking the time to refresh your knowledge also helps reinforce good habits and keeps you aware of any updates in industry best practices.
