What Does SCO Module 1 Cover?

If you work in the gas industry, especially on the gas network, then you’ve probably heard about SCO training. It stands for Safe Control of Operations, and it’s all about making sure people can work safely and responsibly when dealing with gas infrastructure.

SCO training has several parts, and Module 1, also known as SCO Core, is where it all begins.

At Jason Rowley Ltd, we’re proud to deliver this essential course in a clear, practical way that’s designed to help you stay compliant without all the jargon.

What Is Module 1 (SCO Core)?

SCO Module 1 is the foundation of the entire SCO training framework. It’s the starting point for anyone who needs to understand how Safe Control of Operations applies to their role.

Whether you’re an Authorising Engineer or a Competent Person working on the gas network, Module 1 provides the core principles. At Jason Rowley Ltd, we help you build a solid understanding of the procedures and why they exist.

This module is a requirement for both new entrants and those renewing their SCO registration.

Course Format & Logistics

Our SCO Module 1 course is designed to be accessible and straightforward. It typically runs over a single day and can be completed either in a classroom setting or virtually, depending on your preference.

A current SHEA Gas registration is required before attending. The course fee includes the training session, end-of-day assessment, and EUSR registration upon successful completion.

We ensure the course is well-structured and paced, allowing time for questions and real-time discussion to help you fully grasp the content.

Module 1 Learning Objectives & Topics Covered

During the course, we examine the essential aspects of SCO and their application in real-world gas operations.

We start by explaining the revised SCO procedures, what they are, why they exist, and how they’re applied. These procedures are more than just rules; they’re essential for ensuring safety and operational integrity.

We cover the importance of understanding the scope of work and how different operational contexts affect the way procedures are implemented. You’ll gain insight into the hierarchy of risk and how to apply safe systems of work in practice.

A major part of the course focuses on clarifying roles and responsibilities, particularly the difference between Authorising

Engineers and Competent Persons.

We also examine what happens when things don’t go according to plan. We walk you through deviation and emergency procedures so you know how to act safely and correctly under pressure.

Record keeping, monitoring, and audits are also covered because following the process is only part of it; proving that you’ve followed it is just as important. We also make sure you understand the ongoing requirements for maintaining your EUSR registration.

Assessment & Certification

At the end of the session, you’ll take a multiple-choice assessment to test your knowledge of what we’ve covered. Don’t worry, it’s designed to be fair and straightforward if you’ve engaged with the course.

Once you pass, you’ll be registered on the EUSR database for Module 1, which is valid for five years.

Remember, if your role requires full SCO accreditation, you’ll need to complete other modules, including Permit to Work (PtW),

Forms of Authority (FoA), Routine Operations (RO), and Non-Routine Operations (NRO). We can help you plan that progression.
