What is SCO Training?

The SCO scheme is essential for professionals working on the gas network, covering safe control of operations, permit to work (PTW) processes, and emergency situations. The SCO scheme consists of various SCO procedures that ensure safety across routine and non-routine operations.

Our SCO training courses include:

  • SCO Core Module (Module 1) – Covers understanding gas network procedures, risk assessment, and control of operations SCO.
  • Module 3 – Non-Routine Operations – Covers emergency situations identify, risk hierarchy, and non-routine operations.
  • SCO PTW (Permit to Work) – Covers core permit to work, permit to work PTW, and records management.

Individuals successfully completing these courses gain SCO registration under the EUSR registration category.

Complete SCO Training - All Five Modules

At Jason Rowley Ltd, we offer the full suite of SCO training modules, ensuring that individuals working in the gas industry gain the necessary technical competence to safely manage routine and non-routine operations. Our training covers all five SCO courses, providing a uniform approach to gas safety procedures.

SCO 1: Core (Module 1)

The SCO Core module provides the foundation for all other SCO courses. It covers the Safe Control of Operations principles, gas network procedures, and risk-based management. Participants learn how to apply own gas safety procedures and understand the structure of the gas network.

SCO 2: Core Permit to Work (PtW)

This module covers the core permit-to-work system, including documentation, issuance, and cancellation of permits. It explains how to ensure correct permit-to-work and demonstrates how to manage permit-to-work PTW requirements safely. Find out more about our SCO PtW and FoA modules.

SCO 3: Non-Routine Operations (NRO)

The non-routine operations (NRO) module focuses on higher-risk or emergency situations. It teaches participants how to assess hazards, apply risk-based management, and ensure the control of operations SCO under non-standard conditions.

SCO 4: Routine Operations (RO)

This module addresses routine operations within gas distribution networks. It helps professionals apply consistent gas network procedures and maintain compliance in day-to-day tasks. This includes understanding how to manage 4 routine operations RO safely and effectively. Learn more about SCO RO training.

SCO 5: Form of Authority (FoA)

The Form of Authority (FoA) module focuses on the responsibilities of authorising engineers and responsible engineers. It ensures participants can verify competence, issue authorisations, and manage EUSR registration across their teams.

Each SCO training programme is delivered by industry experts, ensuring competent persons meet the appropriate level of knowledge and skills required for gas distribution companies.

SCO Renewal Training

For individuals with current SCO registrations, we offer a renewal training programme to ensure ongoing compliance with the revised SCO procedures. This renewal programme helps participants stay up to date with industry standards.

We deliver both initial training programmes and renewal training programmes.

  • The initial programme provides new participants with the underpinning knowledge and competence-based assessment required for EUSR registration.
  • The renewal programme supports individuals with existing SCO registrations, helping them maintain specific knowledge and update skills to meet the latest gas safety procedures based on requirements.

All training follows the Utility Skills Register (EUSR) framework and meets the assessment standards for gas distribution companies.

Assessment and Registration for SCO Training Courses

Each course includes both a knowledge-based part and a competence-based part, ensuring participants can apply their learning on-site. Successful completion leads to EUSR registration within the correct operations registration category.

You will receive certification confirming your competence under the SCO scheme and your eligibility for the network registration associated with your role.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SCO?

The SCO scheme ensures that individuals working on the gas network are trained to do so safely by understanding gas network procedures and correct Permitry. The SCO scheme is the knowledge-based part of a Competent Person’s or Authorising Engineer’s route to network registration and is followed by the competence-based part of the overall requirement.

For individuals new to SCO or whose registration has expired the course must be completed in a classroom. For those that need to renew a current registration there is the option to do an online course.

All our courses can be booked online here. If you can’t find the course you need, please get in touch.

The cost of training includes EUSR registration, a virtual card, and a plastic smart card.

All candidates must possess a current SHEA Gas registration.

A combination of written and practical assessments within the classroom are carried out.

SCO registration lasts for five years from the date the course started.

  • SCO Core, PtW & FOA 1 Day
  • SCO NRO 1.5 Days
  • SCO RO ½ Day

The SCO 23 is a mandatory requirement for Cadent Contractors and is a recent requirement, which is why you may not have heard about it. Without it you will not be able to get your STC (Safety Technician Competent).

The course consists of:

  • A short video
  • A presentation with some questions
  • A declaration letter that needs to be signed by the candidate.

Anyone that has an existing SCO registration will need to complete this and if they are doing a new SCO course it will be included at the end.

Please feel free to get in touch if you can’t find the answer to your question.
