What Is SCO Renewal and Why Is It Essential?

The SCO scheme consists of five modules that govern safe working practices across the UK gas network. These modules cover core responsibilities such as permit to work, routine operations, non routine operations, and the Form of Authority. To remain authorised to perform these activities, you must renew your registration at set intervals.

SCO renewal is not just a formality. It ensures that gas industry personnel continue to demonstrate competence in applying gas safety procedures based on national guidance. By completing the renewal programme, you reinforce your knowledge of risk assessment, legal frameworks, and safe control of operations.

Entry Requirements for Renewal

To take part in SCO Renewal training, you must:

  • Hold a current SCO registration (expired registrations may require the initial SCO course).
  • Have a valid SHEA Gas card.
  • Have completed the SCO Core module before renewing PtW, RO, NRO, or FoA.

For example, you cannot renew
Non-Routine Operations without a valid Permit to Work. We work with your employing organisation’s responsible engineers to confirm your eligibility and ensure you are registered for the correct modules.

Where and How Is the Course Delivered?

We offer SCO renewal training nationwide, with options for classroom delivery at our Manchester centre or virtual classrooms via trainer-led online sessions. You’ll complete the training in a live, interactive setting with full trainer support.

This flexible delivery ensures you’re able to meet your network registration requirements whether you’re renewing a single module or completing a full renewal programme.

SCO Renewal Training Modules

All modules follow the latest gas safety procedures based on national guidelines. Each renewal module includes assessment and successful completion is required to maintain your EUSR registration category.

Module 1: SCO Core (Approx. 3 Hours)

Module 2: Permit to Work (PtW) (Approx. 1.5 Hours)

Module 3: Non-Routine Operations (NRO) (Approx. 1.5 Hours)

This module introduces the revised safe control of operations procedures, outlining the scope and process of the SCO core module. It covers the hierarchy of risk controls and clearly defines the roles of competent persons and authorising engineers. You’ll also learn about audit requirements, performance monitoring, and how to maintain SCO records effectively.

You’ll learn when a permit to work is required and how to apply it safely and correctly. This includes understanding the full scope of risk assessment, knowing the roles involved in SCO PTW planning and execution, and ensuring documentation and permitry are properly completed and compliant.

This module covers the safety controls required for non routine operations, including risk-based management and scenario planning. You’ll be taught how to correctly complete the NRO form and apply your own gas safety procedures in non-standard tasks with additional risk.

Module 4: Routine Operations (RO) (Approx. 1 Hour)

Module 5: Form of Authority (FoA) (Approx. 1 Hour)

Here, you’ll cover how to use Routine Operations documentation, including control boundaries, authorisations, and records. You’ll also review planning and communication responsibilities across teams handling low-risk but essential activities.

This module explains when a Form of Authority must be used, how it is managed, and the importance of communication during the handover process. You’ll also review deviation protocols and conflict checks to ensure safe control throughout the job lifecycle.

SCO Renewal Course Duration and Pricing

SCO Renewal is £100 + VAT per module, and this last for six hours. Courses are delivered upon request, so please contact us to arrange a suitable time to undertake this training renewal.

Understanding Gas Network Procedures and Compliance

The SCO renewal programme is structured to reinforce your understanding of gas network procedures, workplace responsibilities, and risk-based management. You’ll refresh knowledge of routine operations, conflict checking, and documentation standards while reviewing how to apply your own gas safety procedures within the wider framework.

This ensures that you not only pass the multiple-choice question paper but also demonstrate the appropriate skills required to work safely under the scheme. By updating your own gas safety procedures, you contribute to a uniform approach across gas distribution companies and support regulatory compliance.

Assessment and Certification

Each renewal module includes:

  • Knowledge covered during structured teaching.
  • A multiple-choice question paper for assessment.
  • Practical exercises linked to routine operation documentation or permitry.

On successful completion, your records will be updated on the EUSR system, and you’ll receive an updated SCO smart card or virtual EUSR card. This ensures uninterrupted network registration and confirmation that you meet SCO competency requirements.

Supporting Your Competence and EUSR Status

The renewal training programme reflects the latest developments in understanding gas network procedures and reinforces how to apply your own gas safety procedures correctly. Whether you’re managing a permit to work (PtW), completing non routine operations (NRO), or issuing a Form of Authority, your renewed knowledge ensures safer operations and regulatory compliance.

By holding the correct EUSR credentials, you can lead work confidently across gas distribution networks and contribute to planning and execution in line with internal and external standards. We ensure your risk assessment processes align with gas safety procedures based on GL/6 and HSE guidance – giving you the tools and assurance to work safely and effectively.
